History



West Lake Hills itself was founded only a few decades ago, but Travis County was established in 1840 by the Republic of Texas. At the time, the community of nearby Waterloo was renamed Austin, and it then became the capital of Texas.

Wild Basin Wilderness Preserve occupies 227 acres just west of the community. The preserve protects pristine hill country, and it is now a center for nature programs and student research. There are 2.5 miles of hiking trails that meander through woodlands and grasslands.

Just a few miles east on Red Bud Trail is the Lions Municipal Golf Course, easily the most popular municipal course in the area. The Lions Club built the course as a public service project back in 1928. Over the years, golf greats like Ben Hogan, Byron Nelson, Tom Kite and Ben Crenshaw have played here. The Salvage Vanguard Theater in Austin showcases innovative plays, modern operas and exciting musicals. The Palmer Events Center hosts everything from concerts to hot rod shows.

Events
