Lakeway, Texas

Lakeway TX Real Estate, Lakeway area and Community Information

Lakeway, Texas, is a suburb of Austin that is about 22 miles from the downtown area. This community of about 12,000 residents is located in the Texas Hill country on the southern shore of Lake Travis. The community was not founded until the 1960s when the exclusive Lakeway Inn opened here. The 1962 groundbreaking ceremony featured Lady Bird Johnson and the governor of Texas. Today, that same inn has been expanded into the elite 168-room Lakeway Resort and Spa. The Lakeway Regional Medical Center is a newer 200,000 sq-ft facility here.

Parks and Recreation

Those that own Lakeway real estate will never tire of the golden sunsets over Lake Travis, a reservoir on the Colorado River that was made possible by the construction of the Mansfield Dam in 1942. Water lovers will revel in the opportunities for boating, jet skiing, sailing, tubing and fishing. Numerous resorts exist along the shores of this large lake. Lakeway is home to an award-winning marina as well.

Lakeway City Park is situated right on Lake Travis. It offers swimmers and sunbathers a nice beach. The park also offers hikers and strollers two miles of trails. Lakeway also offers its "Bark Park," a dog park that offers separate accommodations for large and small dogs. Canoeists and kayakers enjoy Hunt Creek Cove.

Attractions and Activities

One unique way to experience Lake Travis is via a fly-board experience that's offered right in the Lakeway area. The Austin Aquafly enterprise allows intrepid adventurers a chance to literally get airborne above the lake. It provides for a most memorable experience.

Events

A full slate of community events are offered throughout the year. Included among these is the Great Goblin Glow, a hot air balloon festival at which pilots fire up their balloons at dusk for a most dramatic display. Halloween also inspires the "Dead End" cemetery, where live bats greet those festooned in imaginative costumes.

The Movies in the Park series at Lakeway City Park is well-attended. The annual Easter egg hunt fills kids with excitement and anticipation. In December, the area behind City Hall is adorned with the Trail of Lights display.
